Most patients recuperating immediately after elective or emergency surgery receive around-the-clock care in the 15-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Critically ill and some surgical patients are cared for in the intensive care units. A collaborative, multidisciplinary team of health professionals cares for approximately 1,500 patients annually who are recovering from conditions that require surgical intervention. Fourteen attending doctors with experience in critical care rotate for 24-hour coverage of the ICU, alongside a nursing staff of 48.
